Expanding VOD Storage to a NAS

Last Updated:March 13, 2026

Cablecast supports using a NAS (Network Attached Storage) to expand the storage available for Video on Demand (VOD) content. This is a great option if your VOD library is growing and your local server storage is running low.

If you haven't already configured your NAS as a File Store with Cablecast, be sure to follow the steps in the File Stores article first.

Create a NAS VOD File Store

Once your NAS is configured for use with Cablecast, do the following:

Go to Settings → System Settings → File Stores.

Click New File Store.

The Cablecast File Stores page with a red arrow pointing to the New File Store button at the bottom left.

Name the File Store NAS VODs or something similar.

Select the VOD server (or the host VIOLite Omni if you are using an Omni configuration) from the Server dropdown.

Choose Active from the Type dropdown.

Choose VODs from the Purpose dropdown.

Click Add Mount, then set the Type to UNC.

In the Address field, enter the network path to your NAS share — for example, \\NAS-Server\CablecastShare. A UNC (Universal Naming Convention) path is the standard format for identifying shared network locations.

Enter the Username and Password for your NAS share.

Click OK.

The New Mount dialog with the Type field set to UNC, the Address field containing \NAS-Server\CablecastShare, a Username field, and a masked Password field, with Cancel and OK buttons.

Under VOD Configuration Storage Role, set the dropdown for VOD Configuration 1 to your preferred option.

Note

Use for New VODs makes this NAS your primary VOD storage location, where all new VOD files are written. Additional VOD Storage adds this NAS as an expansion location alongside your existing VOD store.

The New File Store form with the VOD Configuration Storage Role dropdown open for VOD Configuration 1, highlighted in red, showing three options: Not Configured (currently selected), Use for New VODs, and Additional VOD Storage.

Click Save.

The Cablecast File Stores page with the newly created NAS VOD file store highlighted in red, showing a status of Discovery Pending under Last Connection.

What to Expect

It typically takes a few minutes for the new NAS VOD File Store to begin checking in and for files to be playable on your Internet Channel. If you run into any errors or issues, reach out to Cablecast support at support@cablecast.tv — the team is happy to help investigate.
